The photos here are “engineer porn” so if you skip them, I’ll understand. I can’t escape my past. (I was born an engineer.) The Park has much more than the USS Alabama. On the submarine, the USS Drum, I even encountered another engineer involved in automation; he even used the magic word “PROFIBUS.”
USS Alabama
On the trip from Florida to Texas, we went through “L A” and “L A.” Specifically, La (Louisiana) and L A (Lower Alabama). I L A, we stopped in Mobile to see the battleship USS Alabama at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park.
Just Another Lighthouse
The Saint Augustine Lighthouse – a lighthouse and museum depicting life for the lighthouse keepers and the lighthouse itself.
Distillery Chocolate
Actually, two different things: distillery and chocolate factory in Saint Augustine. They have this in common: they both provide free samples!
The Fort
The fort is Castillo de San Marcos which is the original name; it went through various name changes as Florida changed hands – Spanish, British, Spanish again, American, Confederate.
Fountain of Youth
Our first full day in Saint Augustin featured stops in the History Museum at Gator Bob’s (a gift shop and starting point for the trolley), the Fountain of Youth, Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, and Castillo de San Marcos.
Hello, Dali
I keep hearing Louis Armstrong singing even though the spelling and even the pronunciation are wrong; Dali has the emphasis on the last syllable. Anyway, we spent part of New Year’s Day at The Dali Museum.
Manatees
We’re staying in Manatee County, FL so we thought we should see Manatees. Fortunately, the Tampa Electric Power Company provides a viewing center. It seems that in winter, the Manatees like the warm water the plant discharges.
Not the Zoo
Eighty school buses parked at the zoo convinced us to go the Desert Botanical Garden again.
Odds and Ends
A few odd odds and leftover ends from the photos (and one video) of our last trip.
