San Antonio’s Witte Museum was an interesting diversion. Not pronounced WIT. Not pronounced WITTY. It’s WITT -E. There was a room stuffed with Texas animals. Right, the animals were stuffed, too. There was a special exhibition of San Antonio’s history. Some history nuggets:
- Many original settlers were from the Canary Islands.
- The population swelled during the Mexican Revolution as hundreds of thousands of refugees entered.
- The bloodiest battle of the Texas Revolution occurred just south of San Antonio. The rebels (aka the good guys in this war) were routed.
- The military has always had a large presence.
- One of the Texas animals – a pronghorn antelope. Arizona has them, too.
- There was a display of animatronic dinosaurs. We skipped it because we saw it at the Bishop Museum.
- How can you tell an alligator from a crocodile? If it smiles, it’s a crocodile. This American alligator forebearer was 30 feet long.
- Just because I’m an engineer…
