Due to end-of-holiday traffic, we spent an extra night on the road home. In Palm Desert outside Palm Sprngs. The Palm Springs area has named many of their roads after famous people. But I think today’s youth would ask “Who is that?!” (Maybe I’ve just seen too many “man on the street” and “kids on campus” interviews to have much hope for any knowledge of who these folks are that have streets named after them.) A sampling of the easy ones:
Sonny Bono Memorial Freeway (I can share more about him if you need a clue – see what I did there?)
Gene Autry Trail (singing cowboy, TV and movie star)
Gerald Ford Drive (#38)
Frank Sinatra Drive (actor, singer)
Bob Hope Drive (comedian)
Dinah Shore (singer who makes me want to see the USA in my XXXXXX, 10-year-old minivan)
Four of these are singers; I have some of each of their tracks on my iPhone, including Gene Autry’s biggest hit “Rudolf, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
Dinah Shore had a TV variety show way back when. It was sponsored by Chevrolet. I found this old commercial which explains my inclination to see the USA. In the 50’s and 60’s I could identity make, model, and year of any car I saw – including Beetles.
