Tarpon Springs Spongers

Our final stop before the final drive home, concluding our “First Farewell Tour of East Coast Family and Friends.” My wife had seen ads for Tarpon Springs highlighting its sponge diving history. We were looking for a museum, but there was none. Instead we found a history display in the first gift shop we hit. The initial sponge divers were Greek and Tarpon Springs still has the largest population of Greek-Americans in the country.

Departing Tarpon Springs we avoided the toll roads and had a pleasant drive up the sun coast on US19 and US98, four lane, divided highway with little traffic.
