There’s a lot of history on this site, not just Fort King George, a short-lived English garrison located to protect from Indians and those pesky Florida Spanish. Today it’s located in Georgia, but then it was a South Carolina colony. The visitor center had a small museum.

The site of Fort King George is a glimpse into 4,000 years of American History. This marshy bluff has yielded unique archaeological and anthropological discoveries that have helped us to understand the history of the coastal south. Simultaneously, on this very site, are layered the histories of the Guale Indians – its earliest inhabitants, the Spanish missionaries of the 16th and 17th centuries; the garrison soldiers of the 1721 British outpost; Oglethorpe’s Highlanders of 1736; and finally the industrious people of the 19th and 20th century sawmilling era.
