Crown Point

Across the bridge from Chimney Point is Crown Point, home to two forts. Earliest fort is Fort St. Frederic; the one I mentioned in my last post. The French used it harass the British nearby. In 1759 the British captured the area and began construction of “His Majesty’s Fort of Crown Point.” The Americans briefly occupied it in 1775 until the British retook it through the end of the Revolution.

This is a New York state park open during the summer. I got so wrapped up in reading about the history in the museum that I didn’t get photos. The linked website has the photos I should have taken.

My photos from inside the museum:

When I say I got into the history, I got into the history. ChatGPT provided many sources [Prompt: “I’m looking for an online history of the Chimney Point / Crown Point area from before the French and Indian War past the American Revolution.” Plus follow-ups]. The best two were:

Lake Champlain Maritime Museum — “French & British Military Conflict (1664–1763)” [The Maritime Museum was on my list of things to see, but I ran out of time.]

“Lake Champlain: Voyages of Discovery” This illustrated PDF includes maps and covers the history through the Revolution.

Good picture from the National Park Service.
