I’ve reviewed the apps I use for travel in “There’s an App for That…” Five years ago I said I would add a post about my hardware. This is it (a tad late). There’s a lot of hardware in the minivan, so this is part 1. You probably won’t need all of these, but at least have a Window Breaker/Seatbelt Cutter (they’re inexpensive) and a flashlight. Yes, your phone has a flashlight but a stand alone flashlight is easier to use.
Near the Driver
Number one safety device: Window Breaker/Seatbelt Cutter. This is one of those things you hope you never need. I keep ours in the glove box but within reach of the driver.
Dash Cam. After a grandson was hit by an errant driver who later claimed it was my grandson’s fault, he got a dash cam… and so did I for under $100. Not just for accidents, I’ve saved videos of animals crossing in front of the car.
Hand Cleaner. Our minivan has 4 cupholders for the driver and passenger. Even before covid, we kept a pumper hand cleaner in one of them.
In the glove box. Flashlight, Swiss army knife, folding pliers, multi bit screwdriver, tire gauge, multi-corded charger, hair brush (not for me), plastic utensils, disposable rain poncho, salt and pepper packets (from fast food places), BlueDriver diagnostic device (see “app for that” post for details), laminated cards identifying plants, trees, and birds. And, of course, manuals, insurance card, and registration.
In the console: binoculars and an amazing number of fast food napkins.
In front of the console: fast food bag folded over at the top for waste paper and box of Kleenex.
Between the console and seats: windshield sun shade and large atlas. Can’t always rely on the app.
In the door pockets: umbrellas and small first aid kit.
We accumulated all this stuff gradually over our traveling years. Your needs will depend on how much you travel. But as you start traveling, picking up some of these items may let you avoid our needs-based, slow acquisition of stuff.
Next post will move farther back in the minivan.
