I’ve been working on the railroad, all the livelong day. Or at least that what Kay was singing to herself all day as we rode the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge to and from Silverton, CO. It was a great trip even though the sunny morning gave way to a rainy afternoon. Having booked tickets just yesterday, the only seats left were in an enclosed coach. Actually, worked out better that way considering the rain. I knew what to look for the whole trip, because there’s an app for that! Here are more photos than usual and a must-see video:
- Getting ready to go. Photo taken by our neighbors Keith and Kathy that we just met.
- Steam engines use lots of water. One of our two watering stops.
- Watering stop at Tank Creek.
- Watering stop at Tank Creek.
- Abandoned rolling stock.
- Reconstruction needed.
- Tacoma Power plant. Built in 1905 and still operating.
- One of many firefighting helicopters we saw.
- Front of trsin.
- Back of train.
- Letting off a little steam over the High Bridge.
- Alternate transport in Silverton.
- Old mine just outside Silverton.
- Stopped to pick up and discharge hikers.
- When we weren’t watching, they added a second engine to get us up the mountain.
The trip along the high line (not nerve-wracking at all):
