Second stop on the nostalgia tour was Goblin Valley State Park in Utah. In 1969 there were no facilities here at the end of the graded dirt road. The facilities now include a visitor center, an entrance station ($20 per car and worth it), and a paved road. Part of the movie Galaxy Quest* was filmed here. They paid for paving the road.

Among the first goblins you encounter on entering are three guards.

If you blow up this photo you can see me in the valley searching for beryllium spheres.

A telephoto view of my search. In Galaxy Quest they were searching for these spheres. A ranger gave me the exact coordinates of the shuttle landing place.

Up on the cliff is the photographer of my search.

In the 1950s the search was on for uranium in the area. This is a Geiger counter that would be used to detect uranium ore.
*Galaxy Quest is widely regarded as the second-best Start Trek movie even though it is not really in the Star Trek continuum (but it kind of is).
