As we’re ready to bid Galveston adieu, we stop at the Galveston Naval Museum at Seawolf Park on Pelican Island. It features the USS Stewart (a destroyer escort) and the USS Cavalla (Gato Class Submarine). Both saw service in WW2.
Prior to this visit I had never heard of a destroyer escort ship. Not heavily armed or armored they did see some intense action in the Samar Strait. I recently read about that battle, prompted by a mailing list I’m on, Survival Cannot Be Guaranteed.
- USS Stewart guns.
- USS Cavalla seen from the USS Stewart.
- See the little opening that separates the water-tight compartments? In the movies the sailors run through those with ease. I did not.
- Forward torpedo room.
