Douglas, Wyoming is known for two exciting things: its railroad museum and the world’s largest jackalope. (City tag line: “We know Jack.”)
Let’s start with the jackalopes. Spoiler: jackalopes are mythical.
- World’s largest jackalope (at the train museum).
- Formerly the world’s largest jackalope (downtown).
The train museum has a lot of rolling stock including a steam engine.
- Chicago Burlington and Quincy 4-8-4 steam locomotive. Built in 1940, retired in 1956.
- Double decker stock car. Built in 1914 as a boxcar, converted in 1936. Used for sheep and pigs.
- A 48-seat dining car, built in 1947. Retired in 1972.
- Linen table cloth seating.
- Dining car kitchen.
- Inside a berth on the sleeper car. Capacity of 24 plus the porter. Built in 1950. Retired in 1972.
- Built in 1884 as a main line freight caboose for $1,023. Brakes updated in 1912. Refurbished in 1958 and delivered to Douglas.
- Current configuration: end of branch line crew sleeping quarters.
There is also an 1884 day coach and a 1911 baggage car.
