Glenn Campbell sang “Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea winds blowin'”

So we drove down to hear the sea winds, aka gentle ocean breezes, hoping for cooler temperatures than Houston. And to see the sights. It had been a long time since we had visited. Turns out there’s a lot to see. And lots of history.

Driving to the northeast tip of Galveston Island we found the site of Fort San Jacinto and its  French, Spanish, Republic of Texas, and Confederate predecessors. Most were obliterated by storms. The fort finally named Fort San Jacinto was built in 1897, then the great hurricane of 1900 wiped it out too. It was rebuilt. All were there to guard the entrance to the harbor.

A 90mm gun emplacement from the World War 2 incarnation of the fort is all that remains today.

The site is also a great bird (and ship) watching location.
